APAD is a network promoting dialogue between African and European researchers in the social sciences as well as with developments agents. Initially devoted to the empirical studies of interactions brought about by development, APAD's approach has evolved towards research regarding social change in its broadest sense on the African continent.
Two Uppsala-anthropologists are actively involved in APAD: Sten Hagberg was treasurer 2005-07 and is since 2007 the APAD-president; and Gabriella Körling is since 2007 board member. Assistants Lisa Tistedt and Josefin Emitslöf are involved in managing APAD matters from Uppsala.
APAD has its own bi-annual bulletin (APAD-Bulletin) that appears online and in printed form. The recent issues deal with Entrepreneurs and Enterprises in Search of Norms and Inventing and Mobilising the Local. All back issues are accessible at revues.org
APAD organizes international conferences. The APAD conference that took place on 20-23 January 2010 in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, had some 85 papers and a round-table as well as a networking session. More than 250 persons attended the conference. The theme was Engaging Anthropology for Development and Social Change: Practice, Discours and Ethics. The conference was generously funded by Sida, DANIDA and also Uppsala University. Four Uppsala-anthropologists presented papers at the conference: Jesper Bjarnesen, Sten Hagberg, Gabriella Körling and Charlotta Widmark. In addition former Uppsala researcher Sita Zougouri, now at Ouagadougou University, participated in the conference organisation. Recently, APAD organised a meeting at European Conference on African Studies held in Uppsala 15-18 June 2011. The meeting gathered some 30 APAD current and potential members.
