About the course:
The course provides insights into African societies and their cultural expressions in the past and the present, and tools to analyse complex social and cultural contexts. The course focuses on an anthropological understanding of economic, political and cultural processes in present-day Africa. The first module touches upon economic, political and cultural processes in present-day Africa from an anthropological perspective. The second module consists of a series of lectures on contemporary themes such as civil society and the state; social and religious movements; conflict and refugee problems; development and aid; and gender.
