Beneviolence: The Moral (B)Orders of Security. This seminar will be online.
Abstract: Using material from my ethnography of formal and informal policing of Roma migrants in the peripheries of Rome, I situate my work at the nexus between the anthropology of security and the anthropology of morality and ask: What is the contemporary obsession with security doing to moral reasoning and categories? What moral conceptions legitimize the growing body of security laws, discourses, and practices in late capitalism? How are moral orders produced around claims for security, and which bordering mechanisms prescribe, in moral terms, the exclusion of those perceived as dangerous? In order to grasp the specificities and ambiguities of the moral orders that sustain and legitimize violence against subaltern others under the guise of public benevolence, I develop the concept of beneviolence.
