Surfaces

We are exploring how value is instilled and changed in objects and commodities. We are interested in how surfaces are affected by time and by treatments, such as paint, patina, tear and damage. We consider the learning processes in how to evaluate a surface and judge its relation to "inner" qualities,  pending between phenomenology and theories of class and distinction.

A part of this research interest in surfaces and visuality is Ella Johansson's study on the use of the word "colourful" as metafor in fields that are not primarily visual. Which are the persons, people, places and events that are described as colourful? In which pattern do we culturally ascribe or, as it turns out, also deny colour to phenomena in the world?
